What is science?
What is science? The word science is derived from the Latin word ‘Scientia’, which means ‘ to know ‘. To know all the physical and non-material things and events present in nature and to collect information about them in a systematic manner is called science.
In the Hindi language, the word ‘Vigyan’ has been formed by adding the ‘V’ prefix to the word ‘Gyan’, which means systematic knowledge in relation to any object or phenomenon (that is in nature). According to the other definition, the whole subject-content of a subject that exists as an independent concept and the comprehensive discussion of all the facts related to it can be called science. This discussion should be based on rational, completely basic principles.
The word Vigyan is derived from the Sanskrit word Vigyanam (vi + Gyan + lute) which means special knowledge, which was mentioned in Rigveda.
The word science in English is derived from the Latin word Scientia, which means to know.
The term science is almost always used for the natural sciences because natural science is the systematic knowledge of nature and the physical world.

The meaning of science is the present age of science. Due to many inventions of science, the life of man has become very comfortable today.
The world has become very small by shrinking. Science is a special knowledge by which we find out what, why, and how.
Science is the systematic knowledge that comes from thought, observation, study, and experimentation, which gives information about the subject of study.
Definition of Science
The definition of science is as follows –
“Science is the classified knowledge acquired through systematic study of any subject and proved by experiments.”

‘Science’ has been defined in different ways by different scholars. Some definitions are as follows
- According to Encyclopedia Britannica, “Science is the systematic knowledge of natural phenomena and the relationship between them.
(Science is the systematic knowledge of the relations between natural phenomenons.)
- Some common meanings – “Science is the systematic form of knowledge.
- According to Einstein, “Science is the attempt to make a logical system of thought out of the chaotic variation of our knowledge/feelings.”
(Science is an attempt to make the chaotic diversity of our sense-experience correspond to a logically uniform system of thought.) Huh. Nature of Science – Science provides inspiration for new discoveries and develops them itself.
Types of science
How many types of science are there:-
There are 2 branches of science i.e. it is divided into 2 parts –
Natural Science
Natural science is the science of studying the physical world. Natural science is mainly divided into physical science and life science.
A. Physical Science:-
In this branch of natural science, all the non-living things of nature are studied.
Physical science is further divided into the following 4 parts-
(1) Physics:-
Physics is a very vast branch of natural science. This is the science of energy and in this, the transformation of energy and its fluid relations are discussed.
Many subjects like space, time, motion, matter, electricity, light, heat, and sound are studied in physical science.
The main principle of physics is the law of conservation of energy.
(2) Chemistry:-
Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, properties, and changes that occur during a chemical reaction.
The matter is made up of atomic or subatomic particles such as electrons, protons, and neutrons.
Chemistry is also called the central science because it combines other sciences such as astronomy, geology, physics, and biology.

(3) Astronomy:-
Astronomy is the observation, analysis, and explanation of the events occurring in the universe.
There are estimated to be about 19 billion galaxies in the universe so far and there are about 10 billion stars in each galaxy.
(4) Mathematics:-
Mathematics is a set of disciplines that deals with numbers, quantities, results, forms, relationships, the study of qualities, nature, etc.
There are many branches of mathematics: Arithmetic, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics, Algebra, Calculus, etc.
A person accustomed to mathematics is called a mathematician.
(5) Geology:-
The study of knowledge related to the earth is called geology.
In this, the structure of the earth and the rocks that form it are studied. Under this, many earth-related subjects come, such as – mineralogy, sedimentology, mining, etc.
B. Life science:-
In life science, we read about the structure, functions, development, identity, distribution, and classification of organisms.
Life science is further divided into 4 parts-
(1) Biology:-
The term Biology was first used by Lamarck and Travirens. The science of study of life is called biology. The basic processes in living beings are nutrition, respiration, sensitivity, reproduction, etc. and the study of these life processes is done in biology.
(2) Botany:-
In botany, the activities related to plants are studied. Plants are a fundamental part of life on earth. Plants get oxygen, food, fuel, medicines, etc.
(3) Zoology:-
This branch of biology deals with the study of animals and their life, body, development, and classification. Linnaeus described the naming of animals in the book “The System of Nature” (1735).
(4) Medical Science:-
Medical science is concerned with keeping the human body healthy, freeing it from disease or curing it when disease occurs, and increasing its lifespan. Hippocrates was the father of Unani Ayurveda.
Importance of science
What is the importance of science?
In the present time, due to science, many changes have taken place in the life of man. Due to these changes, the daily life of humans has become very simple today.
In any field, whether it is medicine or agriculture, whether it is industry, transport, whatever revolutionary change is happening in all these fields today is the result of science.
Objective of science
Following are the main objectives of science:-
(a) To understand and fully explain the working style of nature.
(b) To obtain information by proving the study of the laws of nature by experiment.
(c) To control nature by taking necessary experiments and observations and applying their conclusions.
(d) To make human life pleasant and excellent by using the resources existing in nature to solve problems.
(e) To know the scientific reasons for the various customs and traditions prevailing in the society.
